Gush Shalom ///////////////////////// International release March 10, 2003
The
following appeal is the result of many frantic meetings and
consultations among Palestinian activists, NGO's and political
organizations - covering the entire spectrum of Palestinian opinion and
including people and groups who traditionally oppose each other, but
all united in forming The Palestinian Emergency Committees (PEC), in
the face of what may happen during Bush's soon-to-launched war on Iraq.
Several of these groups have approached Gush Shalom and other
Israeli peace groups. Efforts are underway to coordinate with as wide
as possible a range of Israelis, but because of the urgency of the
matter Uri Avnery who drafted an Israeli Statement of Support, asked
not to wait any longer withdisseminating the following. Consultations
with fellow peace activists and groups will focus on action on the ground.

Please amend and adapt to your circumstances. In unions where your
general secretary has signed the Cairo Declaration, e.g. PCS, you might
add a clause demanding that he remove that signature: "Noting that the
Cairo Declaration was adopted at a conference where official Iraqi
government representatives were honoured guests, that its content
reflects that, and that such alignment with Saddam can only discredit
and weaken the anti-war movement, calls on the General Secretary to
withdraw his signature from that document and instead sign the
international appeal, 'No to war, no to Saddam'."

By Jill Mountford In preparation for war on Iraq Blair and
have stepped up their war at home on the FBU. John Prescott's
announcement to the Commons on Tuesday 28.01.03 makes the Government's
intentions crystal clear - they've made the FBU pay dispute a political
dispute in their drive to smash the FBU.

National
Union of Journalists members leafleted at News International's
"Fortress Wapping" in the biting wind on the morning of the
firefighters' strike, 28th January. Firefighters
have endured vicious press during this dispute from the papers of
Rupert Murdoch, and it was to salvage some honour for the trade, to
show support with the firefighters and to assist in the campaign to
bring trade unionism to Murdoch papers that we turned out to leaflet.
This is the text we gave out... (VM)

The Alliance for Workers' Liberty, the Worker-communist Party of Iraq,
and others, will be organising a distinct contingent on the 15 February
anti-war demonstration. Our banners and placards will aim to show a
clear opposition to the war based on principles of democracy and
international solidarity. Those principles lead us also to oppose
Saddam Hussein's dictatorship and political forces like the Muslim
Brotherhood (Muslim Association) which seek to establish theocratic
states based on Islamic law, thus extinguishing democratic, trade-union
and women's rights. Join us at Temple Tube station from 11am, or phone
07748 185553. More: office@workersliberty.org. Please also consider joining the international signatories to the appeal "No to war! No to Saddam! For democracy and international solidarity!".

Saturday's
Stop the War Coalition conference was big - 800 delegates - and got a
lot of press coverage, including on national television. It was lively,
with some good speeches and lots of good resolutions. Without question,
it will inspire many in the next phase of their anti-war work, to build
the anti-war demonstration on February 15th. But there was a lot wrong
with it too. I'm writing a report for Solidarity and what follows is
the beginnings of that...(Vicki Morris)
